Cozumel Travel Guide : What to Pack
Everything about Cozumel is simple and that goes for packing - Don’t Forget the Essentials (Like Dory Tends to Do🐟)
Check out some of my favorite travel items through the links below:
Light, beachy clothes: Because you’ll want to feel the breeze on your skin, not be drenched in sweat. Clothing for warm, humid weather- walking shoes, hat, raincoat (a quick rain shower can pop up at any time), flip flops, shorts and lots of swimsuits.
Cash, passport, passport copy
Sunscreen: Reef-safe sunscreen, because we love the ocean, duh! 🐚
Mosquito repellent: Those little buggers can be persistent, especially around sunset. Stay one step ahead!
Reusable water bottle: Keep hydrated, and save the planet one less plastic bottle at a time! 🌍
Medications: I like to free up luggage space by using this great travel pill organizer
Waterproof Waist strap pouch or waterproof cellphone lanyard pouch
CREDIT CARDS / USD / PESOS - Everything in Cozumel is tourist friendly. Most merchants, hotels and restaurants accept USD but will usually give your change in pesos but smaller vendors, markets, and beach bars along the east side only accept cash (USD or Pesos). You can bring pesos from home by requesting from your bank a couple of weeks early or use the ATM Machines in town to withdraw pesos at a lower fee. We prefer Ci Banco ~ make sure to avoid exchanging money at the airport, it’s much more expensive.
Cozumel Travel Guide: Transportation / Getting Around
Oh boy, here we go! So, your headed to Cozumel and you're wondering, "How do I get around?" Well, no worries! You’ve got options.
Shuttle! – Easy-peasy! Hop on a shuttle, and you’re off to We’ve Gone Coastal or wherever you’re staying—vacation rental, hotel, you name it! My first four trips to Cozumel? Yep, shuttle all the way. I wasn’t planning on venturing too far from the beach, so it was perfect.
Taxi! – You just walk out of the airport, and zoom, you’re on your way! If you’re mostly hanging out at We’ve Gone Coastal, a taxi is a great call. Why pay for a rental car if you’re not really driving around, right? And guess what? Taxi’s are easy to get at any time.
If you’re staying at We’ve Gone Coastal and want to set up a private shuttle or taxi, just let me know! I’ve got some awesome taxi driver friends who can zip you around, especially if you’ve got a crew of 5-8 people.
Rental Cars! – Ready to explore the island on your own? This is the best option if you plan to cruise around, hit the grocery stores, explore the local eats, and tackle the famous beach bar loop (seriously, it's a must). Heads up! If you’re booking from a U.S. site, make sure it includes that mandatory liability insurance. Trust me, you do NOT want to get into an accident here without liability coverage. Nothing wrecks a vacation faster than a trip to the local jail. Yikes!
Both Waze and Google Maps work great here, just remember, streets can be tricky—sometimes they’re not marked well, and one-way streets can feel a little...mysterious.
Oh! And when you're driving around, keep an eye out for scooters—they have the right of way, and the right lane is theirs, except when you’re making a right turn or parking.
Cozumel Travel Guide: Where to Eat and Drink
Casa Mission - If you want authentic Mexican Cozumel food, this Is the place! You won’t want to miss CASA MISSION when you are in Cozumel. Fabiola Miranda & her family have owned & managed the restaurant for over 40 years. Amazing food and drinks, beautiful garden and such friendly and wonderful service always make this a treat. Make sure to order a sexy coffee.
Rock N Java Caribbean Cafe - Downtown Cozumel
If you are looking for authentic Mexican food, great burgers and fries or breakfast, ,then you don’t want to miss Rock ‘N Java which has been a staple for Cozumel since 1995. Delicious latte, amazing breakfast, and incredible service. Located on the waterfront, they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and even offer some healthier options, as well. Located right across the street from Mega Supermarket.
Diego’s Tacos You will find this small open-sided taco stand across from the airport. It’s great for a bite when you arrive or on your way back to the airport. Home-made guacamole, tortillas and garlic habanero sauce make the food here, spectacular. Fish Tacos are amazing!!
Senor Iguanas Restaurant You will find lots of locals coming here for an afternoon or evening meal, with a great view and where you might run into some friends. This one will take credit cards if the system is up and working well - remember you are out on the fringes of electricity out here. I love to enjoy a beer Senor Iguanas Restaurant and some fish or shrimp tacos while overlooking the water on the wild side, any day at this bar.
The Lobster House The original Cozumel lobster house serves fresh lobster and seafood. Set in a quaint Carribbean atmosphere, enjoy the ambiance and music. Best key lime pie on the island is served at the restaurant and can be purchased to go next door.
Key Lime Pie Factory If you want to take whole key lime pies with you, pick up a small, medium or large at the Key Lime Pie Factory next door to the Lobster House. I usually get several since they are only open 6-9 pm and have the best key lime pie on the island, hands down!
Money Bar Good food, great setting, great drinks, great entertainment, and great fun. Family friendly, everyone will enjoy their time here place. Friday evening Happy Hour and live music. This is a great place to watch the sun set and a fun atmosphere with good bands.
Alberto’s Beach Restaurant Great place just to hang out and have a drink and a bite to eat and spend some lazy time on the beach – especially sunset time. Surprisingly, wonderful food! Whatever you order – you will be impressed. You look at it and think it’s just another trap – no, it’s a treat. Service is usually very good. One of the few places you can use US dollars; their exchange rate is favorable. Introduce yourself to boss Jorge, and waiters Fernando and Andres.
Asadero El Billy (known as Billy’s) Good BBQ. Take out only - ribs, chicken, chorizos, cowboy beans, individual aluminum wrapped and grilled potatoes and onions. Meals come with hot sauce, black beans, and spaghetti. CASH ONLY
San Carlos (Pescaderia San Carlos) Well known for their ceviche, this is my favorite ceviche spot. They make a great fried whole fish as well. Don’t miss stopping by here for a great lunch. It is a casual little spot with some character. The owner Nohoch is a bit of a local celebrity. Well worth the extra effort for this spot off the beaten path.
Buccanos: Buccanos Private Beach Club on San Juan Beach just north of town and features a fresh water pool, beach shore snorkeling and snorkel equipment ( snorkel equipment is included in the entrance fee), beach massage, parasailing, jet skiing, diving, small sundry store, and a full restaurant. Sunday brunch is a hit with the ex-pat community. For fine Dining with a beautiful view of the sunset on the north end of the island, Buccanos at Night is a perfect spot for a romantic or special dinner. The food and presentation are amazing. I recommend Buccanos as final night event, before departing the island or for special date nite. They are also known for their Sunday brunch and pool / private beach.
Novena Ola Fine Dining restaurant located above the Museum. They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. The food, service, view and staff are great. Another good place to watch the sunset.
El Moro A great neighborhood Mexican restaurant. This one has been around for decades and a great place to go with friends or as a group.
K’ooban Laab Great tiny restaurant off the beaten path. Fresh pasta and ingredients abound and the mussels and fresh bread … oh my! Fantastic prices. Grab ice cream next door for dessert.
Jeannie’s Mexican Caribbean food and where lots of locals and expats hang out. They have reasonable prices, an extensive menu and also offer brunch. Jeannie’s has good food, good service, good atmosphere and views of the sea.
Wet Wendy’s If you feel like dancing, this is a great place to do so. Tuesday, two for one drink happy hour – all day! It’s a fun lively place. Their blended drinks are impressive!. Always crowded when cruise ships are in port; you may want to avoid it – or not.
Crazy King Burrito Fantastic burritos! Huge burritos - my favorite are the shrimp burritos. Family owned Closed Sundays.
Dick’s Dive Well known and fun this is a great bar to hang out at.
Le Lechoneria is a family business in downtown Cozumel using their exquisite suckling pig family recipe developed in 1930 for sandwiches and Tacos. We had the Cubano Sandwich, Pork Rib Taco, Cafe Cubano coffee, 2 sodas and Mango smoothie. Absolutely amazing flavor and you could not beat that price. This is definitely a must try!
Guido’s A great restaurant, a bit more pricey but great food. They specialize in fish but have great Italian dishes and pizza. They have a great, comfortable dining area in the back.
La Choza Cozumel This place has been around for a long time. They have great Mexican dishes and fish. This restaurant is consistent and well-priced. They offer a comfortable setting, excellent staff and is a locals favorite.

Grocery & Liquor Stores
Grocery Shopping in Cozumel
If you prefer to shop for groceries and personal items during your stay, Cozumel offers several convenient options! Mega and Chedraui are both located along the Av. Rafael E. Melgar waterfront and serve as one-stop supermarkets with grocery and department store items. Sam’s Club is a bit further inland from Chedraui, and for the freshest selections, visit the Mercado Municipal, Cozumel's local farmer's market, located between Calle Dr. Adolfo Rosado Salas and 20-25 in San Miguel de Cozumel. Arriving early ensures you get the best pick of fresh fish, meat, fruits, and vegetables.
If you're staying at We’ve Gone Coastal, we can connect you with a personal shopper who will handle your grocery shopping and deliver it right to you, giving you more time to relax and enjoy your vacation!
Liquor Stores
For liquor, beer, and wine, you can find options at the supermarkets, but if you're looking for a wider selection, check out La Europea Cozumel, located across from Mega Supermarket, or Cava Del Duero at Av. Lic. Pedro Joaquin Coldwell 599 B in San Miguel. Both stores offer great variety and fantastic prices!

Cozumel Travel Guide:
Beaches
Ah, the beaches of Cozumel—where to start? Let’s dive in!
The western side? Super popular! These beaches are close to the ship’s pier and San Miguel, so they’re a bit more developed. Think lots of touristy fun—attractions, restaurants, the works. Plus, it’s all about those calm waters, thanks to facing the mainland of Mexico. Perfect for a chill day on the beach!
But, if you’re like me and prefer a bit more peace and quiet, you’ll want to explore the east coast. It’s wild, rugged, and way less touched by development. The beaches over there are remote and breathtaking—just the spot for a secluded, private beach day.
Whether you’re into beachcombing, snorkeling, or just lounging on the sand, Cozumel’s got you covered. And the best part? No matter what side of the island you choose, nothing is too far away by car or taxi. Ready to find your perfect beach spot?
Playa Palancar Beach – a true gem on the southwestern coast of Cozumel! If you’re up for water sports, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing, or diving, this is the spot to be. Just 20 minutes south of San Miguel de Cozumel, Playa Palancar is easy to get to by rental car or taxi.
Good news: there’s no fee to access the beach! Just grab some food or drinks while you’re there, and you’re all set. If you plan on staying a while (which, trust me, you’ll want to), renting a beach umbrella and lounger is a must—it gets pretty sunny out there, and shade is scarce. So, don’t forget that sunscreen!
This beach is perfect for snorkelers, families with kids, or anyone who just wants to relax and soak up the sun. Facilities are basic but totally convenient with restrooms and outdoor showers available.
Heads up: the local bars, restaurants, and shops only take cash, so make sure to bring enough with you. And remember to rent those lounge chairs and umbrellas if you want a little slice of shade on this beautiful stretch of beach!
El Mirador
If you’re looking for a wild, rugged adventure on Cozumel's eastern coast, El Mirador is the perfect spot! Located about 20 miles (30 kilometers) southeast of San Miguel, this natural wonder is a rocky seascape full of tide pools, natural bridges, and stone spires carved out by thousands of years of crashing waves. It’s a must-see landmark for hikers and explorers. And just 70 yards to the south, you’ll find a natural “Jacuzzi” where the waves create bubbles in a small pool – an experience you won’t want to miss!
Just a heads up—this isn’t a swimming beach. The currents and waves can be pretty dangerous here, so enjoy the view, not the water. Make sure to wear closed-toe shoes with good traction, as the rocky terrain can be a bit tricky to climb.
El Mirador is fairly remote, so come prepared with snacks, water, and anything else you might need for your adventure. The good news? Parking is free!
Here are a few more beach gems you might want to explore on your Cozumel adventure:
Azul Ha (Sunset Beach)
This cozy beach, also known as Sunset Beach, is located just a short distance from downtown San Miguel. It’s a favorite for those who want to kick back with a cocktail and catch a stunning sunset. The vibe is laid-back, making it a great spot to enjoy the golden hour. Azul Ha is perfect for a quick dip, some easy snorkeling, or just lounging and soaking in the beautiful views. Plus, it’s conveniently close to some local bars and restaurants!
Playa Coronas
If you’re in the mood for a more intimate beach experience, Playa Coronas is a small, lesser-known beach that’s perfect for snorkeling right off the shore. Located just south of town, it’s got easy access and offers an underwater world filled with colorful fish and coral. It’s a quieter spot with basic amenities, making it great for those who want to relax without the crowds.
Playa de San Martin
Looking for a more wild and untouched beach? Playa de San Martin on Cozumel’s east side is for you! This gorgeous beach is famous for its long stretch of white sand and rolling waves. It’s not the best for swimming due to strong currents, but it’s fantastic for a peaceful beach walk or soaking up the sun. Plus, there’s a charming beach bar nearby if you fancy a drink with a view.
Playa Bonita
Another stunning east coast gem, Playa Bonita is known for its tranquil beauty. The waves can be a little stronger here, but if you’re up for some adventure or just want a secluded spot, this beach is perfect. There’s also a small restaurant that serves fresh seafood and ice-cold drinks—a great way to cap off your beach day!
Chen Rio
Chen Rio is one of the best family-friendly beaches on the east side. The rocky outcrops here create natural pools, providing calm waters for swimming, even though the east side is known for its rougher waves. It’s also a great spot for beachcombing and playing in the sand, and you’ll find delicious food at the nearby beachside restaurant. It’s the perfect balance of natural beauty and comfort!

Located on the east side, this is usually the first bar you'll hit if you start from the Transversal Highway. Mezcalito’s is known for its authentic Mexican fare, including margaritas, shrimp, and burgers, all served with a relaxed, no-frills atmosphere. You can chill in a hammock, grab a seat at the bar, or hang out at one of their outdoor tables.
Coconuts
Perched at the highest point in Cozumel, Coconuts offers jaw-dropping views of the ocean from a cliffside jungle location. It’s a laid-back spot with hammocks and tables scattered around the palapa-shaded bar. There’s plenty of seating, and on rainy days, you can relax under the large thatched roof. Coconuts is all about the views, great music, and good vibes.
Welcome to Miami (aka Liquor Box, 25 Hour Bar, Coconut Shack, Mojito House)
Rasta’s (Bob Marley Bar)
Open since 1987, this iconic bar is located just outside the entrance to Punta Sur National Park. With its laid-back reggae vibe and stunning views, Rasta’s is the perfect spot to unwind.
